Doctors orders

We all know that when you have major surgery it is best if you listen to the doctors orders so that you will heal quickly and cause no further damage. We also all know individuals who do not heed medical advice. Right now I have a little of both in my care.

We took in 8 lady rats and one boy rat, from as SPCA rescue of 62. There was a good chance that all the ladies were pregnant as there was apparently no separation of the two sexes. Therefore the ladies all had to be spayed so we would not have 8 litters of babies. Thankfully none of the ladies in the original group of 62 were pregnant. We have no idea how that happened but are grateful none the less. Seven of the rats are Himalayan, off-white with brown noses, two are rex, hairless. As they all look very similar I've marked their cones with their initials.

Doctor's orders are simple. Wear your cone of shame and don't climb , and take your pain meds and antibiotics. Within minutes of getting home Hickory had her cone off, Henrietta, Popcorn and Tickle were climbing all over their cage. Only Venus and Stella like taking meds and everyone else tries to push the syringe away.

It's been a week now and everyone is healing well and has finished their medication. In another day or two the remaining cones of shame will come off. Though I do have rat sized cones it's actually more successful to wrap sticky bandages covered by adhesive tape around their neck while they are still under from the anesthesia, trying to tape up a wiggly and very flexible neck with a rat that is awake is impossible. Trust me, I tried.
