Quarantine House

As I have no rats of my own I am a Quarantine house.

As I have several cages on hand I also act as an emergency drop off point. Quarantine is a precautionary measure in case they have mites/fleas or a cold. These can be very communicable between rats so we don't want to pass anything on to people's permanent rats.

On Tuesday the SPCA had seized almost 50 rats from a home, a repeat offender home. SARS picked them up from the SPCA and all 16 of the boys came here. There were about 3 different sizes, so probably 3 different litters. There were also Mama rats and a bunch of girls as well. One Mama was trying to feed most of the babies, which meant the little ones were malnourished as they were too small to nudge the bigger boys and girls out of the way. By Sunday, after being separated and given access to lots of food and kitten milk, the little guys are flourishing. Their fur has grown in, they have grown significantly and love to run and jump around the cage. Surprisingly, given their situation, they are friendly and like to be handled.

Today, we played musical rats. 8 of the smallest boys left to go to another foster home and 6 girls came here. Another rescue group from Everett Washington, Best Friend Rodent Rescue is going to help us by taking the 6 girls and 8 boys that are currently at my place. The great thing about the rodent rescue is that we all help each other out.
