I've had Wallee here since late August. He started out as they always do in the bathroom. He let me pet him as long as he was in his cave. He didn't emerge while I was present but did explore his new surroundings at night. A week later I had to clean the rat cages. This freaked him out quite a bit and no touching was allowed for a few weeks.

Then after weeks of me sitting on the bathroom floor he would come out to eat while I was in the room. I say come out but what I mean is stretch his upper body as far as possible while keeping as much of himself in his cave as possible. Slowly I moved the dish further from the cave entrance and closer to me, ever so slowly. Eventually I was able to pet him while he ate. But once he was done he would back up into his cave. Once we accomplished that the food moved even further away until his entire body was out. Then, while eating I could pet him, any part of him including his belly. After several weeks he decided it was time to stay out of his cave after dinner. I was so excited! After months this was the first time I had seen him and all of his markings all at once.

Normally I would wait to have this behavior repeat itself before I moved him from the bathroom but a few days later I kicked the girls out of the bedroom and installed him there. He is a grown adult cat so I knew he needed more room. He discovered a new cave, under my lazy-boy, and we have had to start all over again. If I want to use my lazy-boy, especially with the foot rest up I move very slowly, and raise the foot rest even slower. He doesn't like the noise and movement so will come out from the cave, give me a disgusted look, and move to the closet. He's really good at that look.
